The Sweetest Meat

In May of 2013, I produced this audio piece with Rachel Lyon for the Third Coast International Audio Festival as part of their 2013 ShortDoc Challenge.

This year’s theme was stories based on the idea of “Appetite.” The rules required all submissions to adhere to that loose idea of the theme, be less than 3 minutes in length, have a taste in the title (i.e. sweet, sour, salty, bitter), and be divided into three parts or chapters.

Early in the year, I had read Rachel Lyon’s short-fiction piece entitle “Cannibal,” which she had written for SmokeLong Weekly, and thought it was a prefect and unconventional idea for the competition. Together we adapted her short piece for audio by using her voice as narrator and incorporating audio recorded in my kitchen, on the streets of Brooklyn, NY, and with my kitten.

You can listen to the piece through SoundCloud or look it up on, where it is available to be licensed for broadcast.

The hardest thing to come up with was the cat calls at the end of the piece. Walking around Williamsburg, I found only a few men who were willing or able to improvise the audio cuts I needed. I found the best approach was to approach couples walking together and have the men turn to their companions and offer them compliments or hit them up with pick up lines, as if they were meeting her for the first time.

Unfortunately, when the piece went up for judging, we didn’t rank in the competition, but I am still very proud of it. Especially when people who hear it for the first time are left mildly disturbed by it. Job well done?
